Hi there guys,

There is a simple way (only four steps) to free from anywhere between 4Mb to 10Mb memory (RAM) on your JAM, but this procedure requires a Hard Reset. If you are a JAM user even 4Mb will matter and 10Mb is very welcome.......Before you proceed please read the Disclaimer (http://pocketpcdubai.infopop.cc/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/314609464/m/762104859/r/762104859#762104859)

Before Starting this procedure, I suggest backing up your Contacts, Tasks and Appointments by synching to your outlook. Backup your Storage files and SD card too, just incase.

Please read the COMPLETE ARTICLE before starting out.

By now you must be wondering how can we free up memory?.....

First you should Know, You have two Storage Areas on your JAM :
1. RAM STORAGE : For your Programs to INSTALL, approximately 7.06 Mb by default.
2. ROM STORAGE : For you to store your files, approximately 8 Mb by default.

The method to free up the memory is very simple, DO NOT INSTALL the softwares that you dont use. For example, there are some Softwares which are automatically installed after a Hard Reset. Softwares like KSE Truefax, MMS, Photo Caller ID and many more. These softwares are installed in the main memory (64 Mb RAM for JAM), ( START > SETTINGS > SYSTEM > MEMORY > MAIN tab, check allocated size of Storage ) , from now on we will call this RAM Storage. The programs stored in this RAM Storage will survive a soft reset or as long as the battery is not drained completely. This RAM Storage , automatically increases to accomodate more programs. So if you install More Programs, More of your RAM is occupied to Store these programs.

These Programs which are installed automatically after a Hard Reset are provided by the vendor, like Carrier Devices, from whom we purchased the JAM, but dont worry, even after you do the following procedure you will still have them at hand incase you want to install them later, as and when required. All of these softwares are present in the Extended_ROM folder as CAB files. Extended_ROM folder is a part of the ROM and each different ROM version may contain its specific Extended ROM ( most of the time its vendor specific and size may vary from vendor to vendor ).

There is another Storage, which is part of your ROM (64Mb for JAM), from your JAM START > SETTINGS > SYSTEMS > MEMORY > STORAGE CARD tab, click on the drop down menu, you will see Storage. Default size allocated is approximately 8 Mb and is a reserved part of the ROM . It acts like Permanent Storage for Files. The reason it acts like permanent storage is by design, so that files stored here will be not be deleted even after a Hard Reset. From now on we will call this ROM Storage.

Unlike RAM Storage and ROM Storage, We cannot use the Extended_ROM space to store anything. The space allocated in JAM for the Extended_ROM is approximately 19 Mb(of which only 10 Mb is used to store the vendor CAB files and 9 Mb is left unused). The Extended_ROM folder is not visible in the File Explorer, to make it visible, read on............

Lets begin.......

STEP 1:
Again, Please take a Backup by synching to your Outlook and then Perform a Hard Reset.

STEP 2:
After Aligning the Screen, The Cut and Paste screen, the Time zone screen, then the screen which says Tap the screen to begin, wait and read STEP 3.......

STEP 3:
Now just BEFORE customization screen begins auto installing customized programs, PERFORM A SOFT RESET, by using your stylus and pressing the reset button at the bottom of your JAM, you have a 3 Seconds time frame to do this after tapping the screen in STEP 2

STEP 4:
After the reset, you will find more space in your Main Memory, START > SETTINGS > SYSTEM > MEMORY > MAIN tab, check allocated size of Storage

....incase you want to install any application from the EXTENDED_ROM you can find them at START > PROGRAMS > FILE EXPLORER > MY DEVICE > EXTENDED_ROM folder,

All programs are CAB files and can be installed just by tapping on them. DONT try to delete the EXTENDED_ROM Folder........DONT run Autorun or other exe files present in the Extended_ROM folder......

NOTE to other I-mate product Users, the above trick works with all I-mate Products and the amount of free memory space varies depending on the number of programs in the extended rom, for PDA2k it may be around 20Mb of free RAM but try it at your own discretion.....

For those who are interested, check this out, Go to START > SETTINGS > SYSTEMS > MEMORY > STORAGE CARD tab, click on the drop down menu, you will see the Extended_ROM listed .....taking up almost 19Mb.

let me know your feedback,

There is a way to combine the ROM Storage and Extended_ROM space (Since both of them are already in the ROM), to get a total Permanent Storage Space of approximately 27Mb (8Mb from ROM Storage + 19Mb of Extended_ROM) to Store files or even Backups. Then you can install some of the programs in this ROM Storage of 27 Mb ( 26.72 Mb to be exact).

Many JAM users have already done it successfully....The method is popularly known as Anansky ROM hack or MKS Big Storage or Big Storage hack (http://pocketpcdubai.infopop.cc/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/582600994/m/170105659/r/331101759#331101759). It has to be done cautiously and also might invalidate your warranty. Anyone who wishes to get 26.72 Mb Storage space try the Method A (MKS Big Storage, I recommend it personally as it is easy)in the link provided below or be satisfied with the extra 4 Mb to 10 Mb Space.

You can NOW read about Method A (MKS Big Storage) for the 27 Mb Storage Space here (http://pocketpcdubai.infopop.cc/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/582600994/m/170105659/r/331101759#331101759).

Hi Oniy69,

When you opened autorun, it installed all the programs in the Extended ROM & then deleted the Extended ROM folder from the RAM.

If you want to get back the Extended ROM folder, you would have to redo the entire procedure again. That implies Hard resetting the device. This way all programs will be uninstalled and you would have the Extended ROM folder.

If you ONLY want to uninstall the programs, it is relatively easy, Go to START > SETTINGS > SYSTEM > REMOVE PROGRAMS & uninstall all unnecssary programs.

hope this helps.
