I am a novice to the gadget world. Nonetheless, I want to enjoy the benefits of the technology. Kindly tell me how GPRS on Flybook is going to help me surfing the net if I want to utilise the GPRS facility of my Mobile phone service provider. Thanks.

I’ve been playing with this for few days and I can say that the Flybook has the best wireless connectivity options in any notebook. As for GPRS, you can always be able to use an extra SIM card (these days some people carry two phones!) and use it for GPRS, best of all you can use it for 3G which is much faster. GPRS support is available if you want to use it, but 3G support is the main reason why I consider buying this notebook. I see myself utilizing UMTS in more operations in this notebook than a 3G mobile phone.

When there is no WiFi, you can still connect to 3G, if there is no 3G then GPRS, or a GPRS via Bluetooth supported mobile phone. I think it can support voice calls as well, I will try next time.

I managed to use “Phone tools” on the Flybook and it is awesome. I am thinking of writing a review for this little wonder.

I am impressed with boot time, it is fairly fast. I am very interested to try 3G and to try using some more applications. Anything new I will update this page http://pocketpcdubai.com/Forums/smileys/smile.gif

You know I have seen lots of reviews and discussions on the flybook, I never imagined the size until I saw it in real life for the first time two days ago. It could almost qualify for a PDA in size

So I've done it: I bought a FlyBook from Gadget Worlds today (even if I told Moh'd few days ago that one of my resolutions for 2005 was not to spend that much money on gadgets! http://pocketpcdubai.com/Forums/smileys/shocked.gif).
I spent most of my evening playing with it - I even write this post on it!- and I must say it is an amazing device (a bit slow to my taste!).
As Moh'd said, it is a great communication tool: I write this poste from my couch, connected to the Internet through my home WiFi network. Freedom!
I'll browse the Internet from my bed tonight!

I wonder if I am not going to use for my next business trips as a complement to my PDA2k, instead of my usual laptop...
The only drawback is that there is no CD-ROM reader/writer (to the opposite of an Acer Tablet PC I saw in Al Ain Center for not much more money).
It's a pity as the FlyBook comes with almost no software installed, and if you want to use it decently, you need to add at least an antivirus software (it's a tool designed to surf the Web!) and a word processor...

Only one serious complain.
Not from FlyBook but from Gadget World.
I went first to the shop without saying anything and asked for the price. I was quoted AED6,600.
I went then to check in Al Ain Center and a shop there quoted AED6,300 before I asked even to get a better price.
They even offered, for AED6,900 the FlyBook and an external BenQ CD-ROM reader/writer.

I went back to Gadget World and mentioned that I saw that their shop was recommended by Pocket PC Dubai.
After checking with his manager by telephone, the salesman gave me a AED50 discount from the initial price quoted, which made the FlyBook at AED6,650, instead of the AED6,500 announced in this thread!
In any case, more expensive than that dealer in Al Ain Centre!

Moh'd, I thought you should be aware of this...

Anyway, whetever price you pay, I'm already in love with my silver-color FlyBook!

Congratulations Denis but I think you should go back and claim your 50 Dirhams. There must be a communication problem as the sales man maybe new and not aware of PPCD offer, I will make sure you get your AED 50 back.

Regarding the Price differences it is actually an issue in the UAE. There are some imported devices being sold in Al-Ain Center that is not covered with warranty though they claim it is. If bought it from Gadgets World you get a support from a dedicated workshop a service center “PPC Service Center” is located in Al Khaleej Center on first Mezzanine Floor handles i-mate and Flybook services.

This is truly a great machine, I like it over any other Tablet PC or Notebook for many reasons such as you can use any type of stylus, not a magnetic one, you can have tablet form as you can see that it comes with XP as its OS with more stability and flexibility, that has an edge over the other Tablet devices, and it is fairly lightweight, the 3G support is another awesome features, maybe you can give us a feedback on this http://pocketpcdubai.com/Forums/smileys/wink.gif

Using FN you can always activate or deactivate any wireless features form the keyboard, easy access.

For me I won’t be missing a CD/DVD combo since I will be using this as in different stations. For example I will go to work and plugging my Flybook to the external monitor, HDD, and external DVD RW. In another station at home I will do the same. Only when traveling abroad I will need to carry with me a small portable CD/DVD combo drive but then I will get a 4 GB USB flash which will do me a lot of good also.

Notice that it has a nice screen for viewing DVD movies http://pocketpcdubai.com/Forums/smileys/wink.gif

As I mentioned I am getting one soon for myself in Black Color though they said black leaves lots of fingerprints.

I don't know about most of you but I believe in after sale service, it is very essential and that’s my main reason to buy things from certain companies, but I have had nothing but good luck with Gadgets World, including email notifications, online help, this forum and decent customer services I guess this is very appealing, to me at least. I guess Denis that’s mainly why you decided to buy it from them http://pocketpcdubai.com/Forums/smileys/wink.gif

Alman,

Coming from Maktoum Bridge go straight, at the end of Banks Road you will find traffic lights, Musalla Tower Mall will be on your right, Use the parking entrance which is before Starbucks, take the ticket, go down, and then down again, then right, use shopping mall lifts. You will find them next to Libra Supermarket on the ground floor, ask the salesman to stamp your parking ticket. http://pocketpcdubai.com/Forums/smileys/smile.gif

I don’t believe this is a drawback. It is good they kept this option open for customers so you can choose the one that fits your needs, because these days there are many external portable combo drives with many features like take for example Apacer portalbe CD burners (http://www.memorylabs.net/appophcdbu.html)
http://store1.yimg.com/I/tonyh_1828_6398887

If the Flybook came with an internal CD/DVD drive it will add to the weight and overall dimensions and it will lose its overall great form factor. It will also add to the cost price for the Flybook making it more expensive. Also another advantage of NOT having the builtin drive is you can always get an updated portable DVD combo drive with the highest specs in the market without buying a new laptop. For users like me I won’t need to buy a new external DVD drive, I already have one and can use it with the Flybook http://pocketpcdubai.com/Forums/smileys/wink.gif

I’ve done a quick research to compare T series with Flybook and found that the Flybook has more features at a cheaper price. The price difference is Dhs. 2000 with this margin you can buy a Smartphone and 1GB SD card! I guess that’s more value for money.

Learn to Fly with FLYBOOK

http://www.gadgetsworld.ae/Documents/Flybook/flybook-1a.jpg

The power of connectivity!
The Flybook is a stylish laptop containing the very latest technology. Measuring the same as a sheet of A5 paper, and weighing just 1 kilogram, it is the smallest Windows XP laptop and can also be used as a tablet PC. With an 8.9” TFT screen, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPRS/GSM and UMTS, the Flybook is certainly a great travelling companion! The possibilities are endless: Internet, e-mail, (hands-free) phone calls, navigation, exchanging data with external PCs or networks, etc. Its bright screen (Low-temperature Polysilicon technology) can rotate and fold down, allowing you to use the Flybook as a tablet PC. Ideal for many business applications. Handwriting recognition and Dragon speech recognition are provided as standard to replace the keyboard. Where else would you find that? What’s more, the Flybook has all the connections you could possibly think of, such as FireWire and high-speed USB ports. The Flybook ensures maximum mobility, connectivity and flexibility. The Flybook uses one of the most economical processors ever: the Transmeta Crusoe. This gives an unusually long battery life and maximum performance. And we’re sure you’ll love the attractive, fashionable metallic colours – you’re bound to make a splash! At last, a notebook you can be proud to be seen with.

Not only is the Flybook extremely suitable for business applications, it is also perfect for personal use. If you have wireless LAN (WiFi) at home, you can surf the Internet and use e-mail anywhere in the house at the touch of a button. The high quality of the screen and compatibility with PAL/NTSC make watching films on the Flybook, or on a connected TV, a real feast for the eyes! The disk capacity is large enough to store thousands of mp3 music files, allowing you to take your best friend, the Flybook, on holiday with all your favourite music and films.

http://www.gadgetsworld.ae/Documents/Flybook/flybook-tablet-tools.jpg
The screen swivels and folds down. Supplied with Mobile Phone GSM/GPRS tools.

http://www.gadgetsworld.ae/Documents/Flybook/flybook-vs-laptop.jpg
See the difference in size. A standard laptop and the Flybook.

http://www.gadgetsworld.ae/Documents/Flybook/flybook-SIM.jpg
The Flybook is unique in having an integrated GPRS phone as standard! Insert your SIM card into the Flybook and, with a single touch of a button, you can surf the Internet, make phone calls just as you would with a normal (hands-free) phone, send/receive emails, send/receive SMS and send/receive faxes, wherever and whenever you choose!

http://www.gadgetsworld.ae/Documents/Flybook/flybook-tablet.jpg
The Flybook is also a tablet PC. You can write on the screen using the special stylus pen, and much more.

http://www.gadgetsworld.ae/Documents/Flybook/flybook-gps.jpg
With the optional GPS module, you can navigate to any destination in your car, or even by boat!

Also If anybody has tried any *nix OS like Linux/Solaris/FreeBSD/OpenBSD on FlyBook do let us have your views.
